New Delhi [India], August 29: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a large-scale operation on August 28, raiding 16 locations across seven states in India as part of a significant crackdown on an espionage case linked to Pakistan. The searches took place in Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana.
The NIA's operation targeted locations associated with suspects who allegedly received funds from Pakistan to conduct spying activities in India. During the raids, the agency seized 22 mobile phones and numerous sensitive documents related to the leakage of classified defense information concerning the Indian Navy. This case, which involves a Pakistani ISI espionage racket, was originally registered in January 2021 by the Counter Intelligence Cell of the Andhra Pradesh Police and was later taken over by the NIA in July 2023.
The NIA has previously filed charges against Meer Balaj Khan, a Pakistani national currently at large, and Akash Solanki. Additionally, the agency filed supplementary chargesheets against Manmohan Surendra Panda, who has been arrested, and Alven, another alleged Pakistani operative who remains absconding. Another chargesheet was filed in May 2024 against Aman Salim Shaikh for his alleged involvement with Pakistani intelligence operatives.
The NIA Special Court had earlier convicted Saurabh Sharma, a former Indian Army personnel, who was sentenced to five years in prison in a related espionage case. Sharma, who was arrested alongside Anas Yakub Giteli from Gujarat, was found guilty of participating in a Pakistan-operated espionage network.
