Islamabad [Pakistan], October 5: Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests aim to disrupt the forthcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Pakistan, according to ARY News.
During an interview with ARY News on Friday, Asif claimed that the PTI's protest is a calculated effort to interfere with this significant conference, set to take place in Islamabad.
He accused the party of acting against Pakistan's interests and suggested it has support from Israel. "The PTI's actions are part of a broader conspiracy to destabilize Pakistan," Asif remarked. "Their protests are not mere coincidences; they are a deliberate attempt to undermine the SCO summit," he added, as quoted by ARY News.
Asif highlighted the importance of the SCO summit for regional cooperation and warned that any efforts to disrupt it would lead to serious repercussions. He called on political leaders, the judiciary, and the public to recognize the seriousness of the situation and prioritize national interests.
Previously, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi indicated that the federal government would take all necessary steps to prevent protest demonstrations in Islamabad.
Naqvi noted that several vital diplomatic meetings and events are scheduled in Islamabad, including a visit from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a delegation from Saudi Arabia.
He reiterated that the SCO conference is also set to occur in Islamabad. "In light of the current situation, no one will be permitted to hold demonstrations," he stated. He urged the PTI leadership to avoid protests in Islamabad, citing security concerns and the upcoming international events.
Naqvi requested that the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reconsider his decision and postpone the demonstration in Islamabad. He also mentioned that Section 144 is in effect in the capital, and no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands, as reported by ARY News.
The SCO summit is scheduled for October 15-16, with EAM Jaishankar leading the Indian delegation.
