Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 30: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sent another letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the lack of response to her previous communication regarding the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor.
In her letter dated August 30, Banerjee highlighted the seriousness of the issue and criticized the inadequate response from the Union Minister of Women and Child Development. She stated that the central response did not address the gravity of the situation, as detailed in her earlier correspondence.
The letter, which was also shared on social media, expressed disappointment with the Union Minister’s reply and called for a more thorough central intervention. Banerjee emphasized that the response failed to acknowledge the severity of the issue and suggested that the appointment of permanent Judicial Officers in Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) needs further examination by the central government.
Banerjee also responded to Union Minister Annapurna Devi’s criticism of the state government's safety measures, stating that West Bengal has approved 10 exclusive POCSO FTSCs and is funding 88 FTSCs and 62 POCSO-designated Courts entirely. She argued that these measures, which seem to have been overlooked, are crucial for addressing such sensitive cases.
The Chief Minister urged for central legislation to ensure stringent punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder, and called for a specific timeframe for the disposal of such cases by trial authorities. She stressed the need for the Prime Minister’s intervention to advance these issues.
This letter follows a previous one sent on August 22, in which Banerjee had also requested the central government to introduce legislation and establish fast-track courts for sensitive cases to ensure swift justice. The case in question involves the tragic death of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
